Render Removal · 5 min read

Render or expose the brick? Making the right call

Cracked, hollow or pebble-dashed render is a common headache. When it starts to fail, you’ve got a choice: patch and re-render, or strip it off and restore the brick beneath.

Often, exposing the brick is the better long-term answer - but not always.

It’s a bigger decision than it first appears, because the right answer depends on what’s hiding under the render. Here’s how we’d think it through with you.

Why render fails

Hard cement renders crack as the building moves, and water gets in behind. Because it can’t escape, it sits against the wall - causing damp and pushing the render off in sheets (‘blown’ render).

The case for exposing the brick

If there’s sound, attractive brickwork underneath, removing the render and repointing gives you a breathable, low-maintenance, often far better-looking wall.

  • No more cracking, blown or hollow render to maintain
  • The wall can breathe again, reducing damp risk
  • Original brick character is restored
  • Often increases kerb appeal and value

When to keep render

Sometimes the brick underneath was never meant to be seen - it can be poor-quality common brick, or heavily damaged. In those cases a proper breathable render system may be the right choice. A survey settles it quickly.

How we help you decide

Before committing either way, we remove a small test area of render so you can see the condition and quality of the brick beneath. That single step removes most of the guesswork - you’re deciding based on what’s actually there, not a hunch.

From there we’ll give you a straight recommendation and a price for each realistic option. Some homeowners love the exposed-brick look; others prefer a clean rendered finish. Our job is to make sure whichever you choose is done in a way that keeps the wall dry and sound.
