Should you remove masonry paint from brickwork?
Masonry paint is often sold as a quick fix for tired brickwork. It can look fresh at first, but on the wrong wall it stores up problems.
Whether you should strip it back depends mostly on how your wall handles moisture.
If you’re weighing up whether to repaint or strip back, it’s worth understanding what the paint is actually doing to your wall first.
The problem with painting brick
Most masonry paints seal the surface. On an older breathable wall, that traps moisture inside the brick. Over time you get damp internally, blown paint, and spalled brick faces as trapped water freezes and expands.
When removal is the right call
Stripping paint back to bare brick is usually worth it when:
- The paint is flaking, blistering or peeling
- You’re seeing damp inside that you can’t otherwise explain
- The original brick is attractive and worth exposing
- You want a long-term, low-maintenance finish
How it’s done safely
Good paint removal uses poultice systems and steam to lift the coating out of the surface rather than blasting it off. That protects the brick face. Once it’s clean, repointing and a gentle wash finish the job.
Repaint or strip back?
Repainting is cheaper in the short term, but on a breathable wall it simply renews the problem - and each new coat is harder to remove than the last. Stripping back to bare, repointed brick costs more up front but is usually the end of it.
There are exceptions. Some walls were painted to hide poor-quality or heavily repaired brick, in which case a breathable masonry paint or render may genuinely be the better option. A test patch tells us - and you - exactly what’s underneath before any decision is made.
